How to order on Tokopedia as a foreigner
Short answer: yes, a foreigner can order on Tokopedia, and plenty of expats in Bali do. The account itself does not need an Indonesian number. The delivery address does. Here is the whole path, checked against Tokopedia's help pages in October 2026.
Step 1: create the account with Google or email
Tokopedia offers three ways to sign up: a Google account, an email address (you get a code by email, then set a name and password) or a phone number with a code by SMS or WhatsApp. Whether a non-Indonesian number receives that code is not documented anywhere, and the sign-up form has no country picker. Google or email avoids the question.
Tokopedia will still ask you to add a phone number to "secure the account" and says it may require SMS verification. Use a number you will keep. If the number on the account stops working, Tokopedia changes it only through the app, with no orders in progress, and asks for a photo of a KTP, the Indonesian ID card, plus a selfie with it. A foreigner can get locked out that way.
Step 2: an Indonesian phone number for the address
The address form on the website accepts only a receiver phone number that starts with 0 or 62. The courier calls that number, so it has to belong to someone who will answer:
- Your own Indonesian SIM. Since 1 July 2026 activating a new SIM card in Indonesia includes a face scan.
- Someone at the address: the villa manager, the guesthouse reception or a local friend. Put their name as the receiver.
Step 3: add the address in Bali
The path is Settings, then Address list, then Add address: search for the place, confirm the pin on the map, fill in the details and save. If the place is not found, there is a manual form with the receiver's name, phone, district and full address.
- Tokopedia has no official rules for villas and guesthouses. Use the optional note for the courier for the villa name, gate colour or a landmark.
- Set the map pin carefully: instant couriers drive to it. You can still move the pin at checkout; after checkout the old pin is used.
- After you order, the address cannot be edited. A wrong address means cancelling, or a return if the parcel has already shipped, and ordering again.
Step 4: payment, where most expats get stuck
For cards issued abroad, Tokopedia's help lists only credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Diners, American Express), from Rp50,000; it never says a foreign debit card works. Manual bank transfer was switched off in March 2025. In practice payment is where foreigners have the most trouble: expats on Reddit describe options greyed out and generic errors on cards and GoPay. Cash at a minimarket, QRIS, cash on delivery and GoPay are the usual way round it, all in the payment guide.
Identity check and KTP
Tokopedia's identity check (Verifikasi Data Diri) is for Indonesian citizens with an eKTP, and passports are not accepted. Tokopedia lists it for Power Merchant sellers, affiliate payouts and adult products; ordinary purchases are not on that list. A separate page for alcohol and e-cigarettes lets foreigners verify with a KITAS, with a review of up to 3x24 hours. The one place a KTP can catch you out is changing a lost phone number, described above.
Tokopedia and TikTok
TikTok has owned 75.01% of Tokopedia since January 2024. In March 2026 Tokopedia told Bisnis.com that the integration with TikTok Shop is complete: products listed on one appear on the other. Tokopedia still runs as its own site and app; when a rumour said the app would close in February 2026, TikTok denied it.
The language
Every one of these screens is in Indonesian. Tokopedia's English switch, at the very bottom of the site, translates only the top menu (checked in October 2026). TokoTranslate translates the site into English, from sign-up to checkout. See how to use Tokopedia in English.
FAQ
Can foreigners use Tokopedia?
Yes. You can create the account with Google or an email address. What you do need is an Indonesian phone number for the delivery address: the address form only accepts a receiver number that starts with 0 or 62.
Do I need an Indonesian phone number for Tokopedia?
Not to create the account, if you sign up with Google or email. Yes for the delivery address. It can be your own Indonesian SIM or the number of someone at the address who will take the courier's call.
Do I need a KTP to buy on Tokopedia?
Not for ordinary purchases, going by Tokopedia's own pages: its identity check (eKTP only) is listed for selling, affiliate payouts and adult products. For alcohol and e-cigarettes foreigners can verify with a KITAS. A KTP is asked for when you change a lost phone number in the app.
Does Tokopedia deliver outside Indonesia?
No. Tokopedia delivers only to addresses in Indonesia.
Can I change the delivery address after ordering?
No. You can still move the map pin at checkout, but once the order is placed the address stays as it was: you cancel the order, or request a return and refund if it has already shipped, and order again with the right address.
