Tokopedia or Shopee: which one should an expat use
Short answer: Shopee is the easier start for a foreigner, because it has an English interface and openly accepts foreign cards. Tokopedia is almost all Indonesian, but it has its own sellers and, since 2026, the TikTok Shop catalogue. Below is the comparison point by point, checked against both help centres in October 2026.
| Shopee | Tokopedia | |
|---|---|---|
| Interface language | Indonesian or English (menus) | Indonesian; the English switch covers only the top menu |
| Foreign cards | Credit cards from 41 countries, full payment only, in shops that accept cards | International credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Diners, Amex) |
| Cash at a minimarket | Alfamart, Indomaret | Indomaret, Alfamart and others, Rp2,500 fee |
| Free shipping | To Bali from Rp150,000 (regular) | Weekly vouchers from Rp5,000, app only |
| Return window | 15 days at Mall shops, 7 at Star+, 2 elsewhere | 2x24 hours after delivery |
| Share of sales value, 2025 | 54% | 38%, together with TikTok Shop |
Language
Shopee has an English setting in the app (Saya, then the gear icon, then Bahasa), and the website asks for a language on the first visit. The menus switch to English; product listings stay in the language the seller wrote them in, usually Indonesian.
Tokopedia's only language setting is an Indonesia / English switch at the very bottom of the site, and it translates just the top menu (checked in October 2026); its terms and privacy pages also exist in English. Its shopping pages (home, search, shops, products) are marked translate="no", an HTML attribute that tells translation tools to leave the page as it is. TokoTranslate is built for exactly this gap: it translates Tokopedia into English, Russian and four more languages.
Paying as a foreigner
Shopee says outright that it takes credit cards issued abroad, in 41 countries among them the US, the UK, Australia, Germany and Russia, for full payment only, with 3-D Secure and in shops that switched card payments on. Minimarket cash works at Alfamart (Rp10,000 to Rp2,500,000 according to Shopee's Alfamart page) and Indomaret (Rp20,000 to Rp5,000,000), with a service fee and a one-day deadline, and QRIS can be paid from GoPay, OVO or DANA. ShopeePay verification asks for a KTP or a KITAS (a passport is not mentioned), and every order carries a buyer service fee whose amount Shopee does not publish.
Tokopedia accepts international credit cards on Visa, Mastercard, Diners, Carte Blanche and American Express, from Rp50,000, but one card issuer, Aspire, warns its customers that Tokopedia's fraud checks sometimes reject a purchase for no clear reason. Minimarket cash, QRIS, cash on delivery and GoPay are the backups; the details are in the payment guide.
Shipping and free shipping
Shopee runs its own courier, SPX, which claims coverage of 514 cities and regencies. According to a Shopee blog post from February 2025, instant delivery covers up to 40 km within 2 hours of the courier's pickup, and same day needs the order before 12:00 and up to 7 kg. Free shipping to Bali is applied automatically or through monthly vouchers: spend Rp150,000 for up to Rp60,000 off regular delivery, Rp30,000 for cargo (up to Rp1,000,000 off) or Rp20,000 for Rp15,000 off instant. If an order misses its guaranteed date, Shopee gives a voucher.
On Tokopedia you pick a speed and Tokopedia assigns the courier. Free shipping is a weekly voucher (minimum spend Rp5,000, verified account), and Tokopedia's pages say you have to pay in the app to get it (one page also allows the site opened on a phone), not on desktop. Neither platform publishes delivery times to Bali; what the couriers themselves say is in the delivery guide.
Returns and disputes
- Shopee: 15 days to return at Mall shops, 7 days at Star+ shops and 2 days everywhere else. Shopee decides a dispute within 3 days, and the decision is final. Change-of-mind returns: one free a month (two for Platinum members, unlimited for Shopee VIP), after that the return shipping comes out of the refund. Mall shops refund twice the price for a fake under "Shopee Garansi 100% Ori".
- Tokopedia: complain within 2x24 hours of delivery and never after the order shows Pesanan Selesai (completed). If the seller rejects the complaint, Tokopedia's support steps in after 2x24 hours.
Size, and Tokopedia's merger with TikTok
Shopee is the bigger market: 54% of e-commerce sales value (GMV) in 2025 against 38% for TikTok Shop and Tokopedia combined (Momentum Works, reported by Bisnis.com in May 2026), and 147.8 million website visits in September 2026 against 42.5 million for Tokopedia (Semrush data via Databoks). In March 2026 the company said every product on Tokopedia is also on TikTok Shop and the other way round; buying is still done separately in each app.
What expats say
On expat forums people describe Shopee as having the bigger range but more cheap items and drop-shippers, and Tokopedia as easier to cancel on and quicker to ship. Foreign cards fail now and then on both, and topping up with cash at Alfamart is the usual fix. These are personal accounts, not measurements.
So which one?
Start with Shopee if you want English menus and to pay with a foreign card. Check Tokopedia when an item or a seller is only there or cheaper there. With TokoTranslate Tokopedia reads in English or Russian as well, so the language stops being the deciding factor.
FAQ
Does Shopee have an English version?
Yes. The Shopee app has an English setting (Saya, then the gear icon, then Bahasa), and shopee.co.id asks for a language on the first visit. Menus switch to English; product listings stay in the language the seller wrote them in.
Does Tokopedia have an English version?
Only for the menu. tokopedia.com has an Indonesia / English switch at the bottom of the page, but filters, product pages and the buy buttons stay in Indonesian (checked in October 2026), and the shopping pages are marked translate="no", which tells translation tools to leave them alone. A dedicated extension such as TokoTranslate translates the rest.
Which one accepts foreign credit cards?
Both, officially. Shopee takes credit cards issued in 41 foreign countries, for full payment only and in shops that accept cards. Tokopedia takes international credit cards on Visa, Mastercard, Diners and American Express. Both can still decline a foreign card, so keep cash at Alfamart or Indomaret as the backup.
Which is bigger in Indonesia?
Shopee. It had 54% of e-commerce sales value (GMV) in 2025, against 38% for TikTok Shop and Tokopedia together, according to Momentum Works as reported by Bisnis.com in May 2026.
Are Tokopedia and TikTok Shop the same now?
The catalogue is: in March 2026 the company said every product on Tokopedia is also on TikTok Shop and the other way round. Buying is still done separately in each app.
