How to pay on Tokopedia without an Indonesian bank card

Payment is where foreigners get stuck on Tokopedia most often. Without an Indonesian card there are four routes that Tokopedia documents itself: cash at a minimarket, QRIS, cash on delivery and GoPay topped up with cash. Foreign credit cards are officially accepted but work for some people and not for others. Checked against Tokopedia's and GoPay's help pages in October 2026.

1. Cash at Indomaret or Alfamart

The most reliable route if you have no local card. At checkout choose Gerai Retail/Tunai (retail outlet or cash), pick Indomaret or Alfamart and confirm. You get a payment code: show it at the till, pay in cash and keep the receipt.

Options do sometimes disappear: in December 2025 an expat in Bali found the Circle K option greyed out.

2. QRIS from any Indonesian e-wallet or bank app

Choose QRIS and Tokopedia shows a QR code that any QRIS app can pay: OVO, GoPay, DANA or an Indonesian bank app. From Rp10,000 to Rp5,000,000, no fee, and you have 75 seconds to pay. Handy if you have any local wallet, or if a friend pays for you.

3. Cash on delivery (Bayar di Tempat)

You pay the courier when the parcel arrives. The seller must have it switched on, and only some areas qualify. In Bali, Tokopedia lists Denpasar, Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Gianyar, Jembrana, Karangasem and Klungkung; Tabanan is not on the list, and the list sits in old seller help, so check at checkout.

4. GoPay topped up with cash

GoPay works without verification, within limits: up to Rp2,000,000 on the balance and Rp20,000,000 coming in per month. Top it up from Rp10,000 with cash at Alfamart or Circle K. To connect it to Tokopedia, both apps must use the same phone number, and Gojek does not accept virtual or internet phone numbers.

GoPay officially upgrades to GoPay Plus (higher limits, transfers) with a passport, one document per account. Foreigners on expat forums report that passport upgrades get rejected again and again, so plan on the unverified limits.

5. A foreign credit card: maybe

Tokopedia's help lists the international cards it accepts: only credit cards, on Visa, Mastercard, Diners, Carte Blanche and American Express. Debit cards have to be Visa or Mastercard, and the page never says a foreign debit card works.

In practice it is a coin toss: on Reddit in September 2026 one traveller's US card failed on Tokopedia while another's had worked for two years. Keep cash at a minimarket as the backup.

What does not work for foreigners

Fees, briefly

An app fee: your first 4 payments are free, then Rp1,000 per payment, whatever the method. On top of that, a Rp1,000 service fee for virtual accounts and instant methods and Rp2,500 at a minimarket; no service fee for QRIS or a full card payment.

The payment page, the codes and the error messages are all in Indonesian. TokoTranslate translates the payment methods and the checkout into English, so you can see which option you are choosing.
